This is the 2nd in a 3 part series of step by step how to videos on speeding up a slow computer. The whole video series was done by my 9 year old, Jessi, who got tired of me being late for dinner because I was with clients fixing their computers. After hearing me say that I was going to make this video “how to” series for months, she offered to do it herself.

She had seen me perform this procedure on her computer before, and with a little editing help, she did it. A step by step procedure on how to speed up your own computer without having to call, “the guy”. Like Jessi says, “If a 9 year old can do it, so can YOU”.

How To Speed Up or Fix a Slow PC – Part 1 Get rid of junk files

It happens all the time.  I’m with a client working on their website or doing social media consulting, and invariably they say, “While you’re here, can you take a look at my computer it’s… ……”.  

A while ago, I was working with a client who (after we finished the demo on her new website) said her laptop used to be fast, but was lagging like it was stuck in the mud.  I took her through the exact procedure contained in these 3 How To Videos.  Her computer was much faster.  She was forever grateful, however, my family – not so much. 

I ran late and missed dinner.  This wasn’t the first time.  I’ve been saying for a while that I need to make a video series on helping people fix their own slow computers.  My 9 year old had watched me fix her computer once and told me that she could make the video for me.  

With a little help, she did it.  A step by step procedure on how to speed up your own computer without having to call, “the guy”.   Like Jessi says, “If a 9 year old can do it, so can YOU”.

New WordPress Blog Web Site for Charlotte, NC Real Estate Agency

A long established real estate firm in Charlotte, NC had been with the same website provider for many years. It was a totally custom built site and they were happy with it, at least for a while. Their old website company prided themselves on the fact that it was “a fully custom site” – they even did a custom Internet Data Exchange (IDX) for listings from the MLS.

But then things started changing, and fast. With the emergence of the blogosphere and social media, the firm wanted to generate content themselves. They wanted the ability to easily add new content and have the flexibility to have that content easily shared on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks. But every time they wanted to add something, they had to call or email the web master, and then wait for the “web guys” to add the new content. The waiting started to get old. So did the additional charges.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was when the local Realtor Association’s MLS changed the way the data was delivered from the MLS via the IDX. That big custom install was now completely broken. The web company wanted $1000’s of dollars to “research and fix the problem” – and they needed months to re-code it.

Amazing Video Tours’ parent company (AVT Marketing) was able to design a WordPress website business blog with a tried and true fully functional IDX (via a 3rd party provider plug-in) in about 2 weeks. We had the site, with IDX, and all the old site content ready to go before the big custom company finished diagnosing the IDX problem.

They have the ability to assign usernames to each of their agents, and the agents can write blog articles. Each article has “share plugins” so that readers can easily share content on social networks. This helps the potential for an article to go viral. Visitors can subscribe to the new blog via any one of dozens of RSS feeds. It’s easy for visitors to join the firm’s Facebook business page, or follow their Twitter feed.

The Last 10 Sold WordPress Website – A Twist on Real Estate Data

I’m so happy to have finished another WordPress website business blog for Last 10 Sold.  This website is different from just about any other Real Estate website you’ll see.  It focuses not on the current Active Real Estate Market, but the current SOLD Real Estate market.  The site provides “Last 10 Sold” data for the last 10 homes sold in a particular neighborhood or area.  Active real estate market data can be found on every Realtor website, but sold data is not.

The site has existed for years as an old static HTML site.  They wanted the ability to write new content easily, and WordPress came to the rescue again.  They also want the site to rank well with the search engines and be integrated with social media and sharing.

The site had previously been hosted on a server in Europe and they used the host’s website editor tool to make the site.  It was a template site and very unforgiving.  When they needed to get in the back end and change things around, the whole site was in German!  They said they swapped out the stock photo that the website company had for the header, and every time the company did an update to the software, they had to FTP all their substitute photos back to the server. What a pain!

Their new WordPress blog web site has all the bells and whistles including easy sharing of the articles to social media sites, easy access to RSS feeds, an easy way to follow them on Facebook and Twitter, and much more.  Behind the scenes is a theme with state of the art code that allows search engines to clearly see and index the whole site.  Additionally, there is a spam blocker, web analytics, and a search engine optimization plugin allowing for the indexing of any page or post on the site.

Help me support Small Business Saturday November 26, 2011

Old Town Fort Mill, SCSmall business Saturday really resonates with me.  It impacts my family right where it counts.  I wasn’t around when Grandpa Schwartz had a successful clothing store at the main crossroads of a small town called Manning, South Carolina in the 1950’s and 1960’s.  I wasn’t even there when Grandpa passed the store on to his son, David in the 1970’s when “small business local” was the way business got done, and David raised 2 kids and sent them both to college on revenues from that store. 

I do know about the early 1980’s when a huge store called Wal-Mart opened up on the outskirts of town.  Prices were low and the store was huge.  It must have had the same square footage of all the downtown stores in Manning combined.  Hey, I believe in capitalism and if Sam Walton did it better than my family then so be it.  But Wal-Mart targeted small towns and devastated the small town mom and pop shops that were the fabric of America.  Now its all big box stores with low prices on items made in other countries.  Somehow during all this “convenience” we find ourselves in the worst economic shape since the great depression and nationwide unemployment of 9% (11% in South Carolina).  But I digress.

This Saturday is a chance to put some of that money back into the pockets of hard working “moms and pops” across the country.  Shop small businesses this Saturday, and as often as you can.  The U.S. Government is NOT going to save us, bail us out, or fix a thing.  It’s up to us.  If we put the money back into small businesses, [eventually] they’ll hire local people, reduce unemployment, produce things in the U.S., and hopefully bring us back to where we were when we were great!
